It was one thing to share meals while they were on duty, struggling through the mountains of reports and requests that everyone seemed to think the Captain needed to read over personally. Automatically, she started to make an excuse, knowing it would be improper but then she realized for Kirk, it really wasn't. He was just as likely to sit with some of the engineers and discuss the latest repairs or the nurses to joke about McCoy as he was to sit eat with her. Considering how much time they spent together, it couldn't hurt either one of them if she said yes. And from the things she'd seen while working with Kirk, she had the feeling that saying no would hurt worse than any gossip.
